Students Joining Mid-Course: You can join ongoing courses at any time. You’ll only pay for the lessons you’ve booked.
Classes canceled due to holidays will be made up. During the week of the holiday, classes will begin 30 minutes earlier. This adjustment will remain in effect until the canceled lessons have been fully made up.

I had a few gaps in my knowledge from the A2 level, but I still found the course manageable and, for the most part, not too hard to understand—thanks to our teacher, Luca. I understand German, but I often struggle to find the right words when speaking. Would a conversation class help?

Yes. That’s exactly what a conversation course is designed for. You’ll practice retrieving your existing vocabulary more quickly, responding more spontaneously, and expressing your thoughts in German without much preparation. The goal isn’t to formulate every sentence perfectly, but to communicate with increasing confidence.

Do I need to speak German well to participate?

No. The conversation course at ILS Basel is offered for levels A1, A2, B1, and B2. Participants learn in mixed-ability groups. The key requirement is that you already have some knowledge of German that you want to actively use and expand upon when speaking.

Can a conversation class help me overcome my fear of making mistakes when speaking?

Regular conversation practice can help you become more confident when speaking. In this course, you’ll practice keeping conversations going, even if not every word or grammatical structure is perfect right away. As a result, your spontaneous German will become more natural over time.

When does the German conversation course take place in Basel?

The class takes place on Fridays from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the ILS Basel . Each session lasts 6 weeks.

Is the conversation course free if I'm already taking a German course at ILS Basel ?

Yes. The conversation course is free for ILS participants who are already enrolled. External participants are also welcome to join and pay CHF 150 for a 6-week course block.

Is a conversation course the same as a regular German course?

No. A regular German course systematically covers various language skills and guides students through a specific language level. A conversation course places greater emphasis on active speaking. That is why it is particularly well-suited as a supplement to a regular German course.

Can I still join the conversation course after it has started?

Yes. It is possible to join an ongoing course. As an external participant, you only pay for the lessons you actually book.
