TheCELI exam(Certificato di Conoscenza della Lingua Italiana) is an internationally recognized certificate for Italian as a foreign or second language. It assesses language skills in the areasof listening, reading, writing, and speakingand is based on the levels of theCommon European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR): CELI 1, CELI 2, CELI 3, CELI 4, and CELI 5.

The exam lasts for all levels:

Written exam – 2 hours
Listening comprehension – 20 minutes
Oral exam – 10 minutes

CELI Ordinario:Standard exam without specialization, recommended for people aged 16 and over (A1–C2)
CELI Adolescenti:For young people aged between 13 and 17 (A2–B2)
CELI Immigranti:For migration-related purposes (A1–B1)

The number of exam places is limited. Please register early using theregistration formor directly at our office.

Unfortunately, registrations received after this datecannot be considered.

The examination fee must be paid by the end of the registration period.

Cancellations before the deadline will incur a processing fee of CHF .
Cancellations after the deadline will result in thefullexamination feesbeing charged.
Cancellations can only be made by email.

In principle, this is only possible after the registration deadline has expired in the case ofmedically certified illness. The examination fee can be transferred to a later date, but amedical certificate isrequired for this. Processing fees will be charged, andcosts cannot be refunded.

The evaluation period is usually 3 to 4 months. Upon request and for an additional fee, an express evaluation can be requested, with results issued within 2 to 3 weeks. However, this depends on CELI's capacity.

The CELI certificate is internationally recognized and accepted by educational institutions, employers, and authorities. It serves as proof of language proficiency for work, study, or residence in Italy. For naturalization in Switzerland, the required Italian language skills can also be demonstrated with aCELI certificatein the Italian-speaking cantons.

CELI at ILS ILS-Basel

The ILS-Basel is a recognized examination center for CELI exams and offers dates for all levels— A1 to C2 —as well as special variants such as CELI Adolescenti (A2–B2) and CELI Immigranti (A1–B1). Here you have the opportunity to officially certify your Italian language skills according to international standards and obtain a certificate that is recognized by employers, educational institutions, and authorities in Italy, Switzerland, and worldwide.

CELI or CILS

BothCELIandCILSare internationally recognized certificates for Italian as a foreign language. Both test the four core language skills:listening, reading, writing, and speaking. With either certificate, you can prove your Italian language skills forstudy, work, or naturalization—even in Switzerland, especially in the Italian-speaking cantons.

The most important difference lies in their origin:CELIis issued by theUniversità per Stranieri di Perugia, whileCILSis issued by theUniversità per Stranieri di Siena. While both exams are based on the same levels ofthe Common European Framework of Reference (A1–C2), they differ in terms ofexam variants, preparation options, and exam centers.

For exam participants, this means that depending on your location, available preparation, and personal goals, one certificate may be more practical than the other. Both offer the optionof retaking failed sections individually, allowing you to demonstrate your knowledge flexibly.
